Long Island has thousands of acres of state and county public parks. In addition to scenic nature and fun activities you and your kids can enjoy state-of-the-art climbing structures, sprinkler pools, roller skating and ice skating rinks, softball and baseball diamonds, soccer fields and basketball courts.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve boasts 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection and propagation of game birds, fish and animals. There are numerous deer and waterfowl, rare nesting birds, including the osprey, and plenty of rare plants, such as trailing arbutus and pyxie moss in their natural habitats. The preserve also has 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski and nature trails, as well as fishing on the Connetquot River by permit.

The mission of Bayard Cutting Arboretum is "to provide an oasis of beauty and quiet for the pleasure, rest and refreshment of those who delight in outdoor beauty, and to bring about a greater appreciation and understanding of the value and importance of informal planting." Found there are extensive plantings of dwarf evergreens, rhododendron, azaleas, hollies and oaks, wildflowers and daffodils as well as spruce, pine, cypress, hemlock and other conifers. The Arboretum is home to for land and aquatic birds, fox, raccoon and other wildlife.

Take a step back in time at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, offering hiking, cross-country skiing, nature trails and fishing. Nestled in the middle of a suburb, the park is comprised of freshwater wetlands, ponds, streams, fields and upland woods, and is an excellent place to pursue fly fishing. The preserve is home to wildlife and a place for people to develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural world.

The 627-acre Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown is open year-round to Suffolk County residents and visitors. An extensive bridle path system and practice ring are available to horseback riders (you need to have a Suffolk County horseback riding permit visibly displayed). Trailer parking is available at the northern (New Mill Road) entrance. Freshwater fishing for pumpkinseed sunfish, large-mouth bass, perch and bluegill is permitted at Stump Pond between sunrise and sunset, and New York State freshwater fishing laws apply. Rowboat rentals are generally available from mid-May to Labor Day; use the southern (Veteran's Memorial Hwy) entrance for these activities.

Heckscher State Park prides itself on having over a million visitors each year. Twenty miles of trails attract hikers, bicycle and cross-country skiers. The Great South Bay and the swimming pool complex can be used by swimmers. There are picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, playground and 69 camp sites; only vehicles under eleven feet high are permitted into the campgrounds.
